Trading Charges in India

When you buy or sell stocks in India, you pay multiple charges beyond the brokerage fee. These include Securities Transaction Tax (STT), exchange transaction charges, GST, SEBI turnover fee, and stamp duty. Together, these can significantly impact your net returns, especially for frequent traders.

Discount vs Full-Service Brokers

Discount brokers (like Zerodha, Groww) charge a flat fee of up to ₹20 per order, while full-service brokers charge a percentage of the trade value (0.05-0.5%). For active traders, discount brokers save significant money. For occasional investors, the difference is minimal.

Charges by Trade Type

  • Delivery — STT 0.1% on both buy and sell side
  • Intraday — STT 0.025% on sell side only
  • Futures — STT 0.0125% on sell side
  • Options — STT 0.1% on sell side (on premium)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is STT (Securities Transaction Tax)?
STT is a tax levied by the government on every stock market transaction in India. The rate varies by trade type: 0.1% for delivery trades (on both buy and sell), 0.025% for intraday (sell side only), 0.0125% for futures, and 0.1% for options. STT is the largest component of trading charges after brokerage.
How does Zerodha-style flat brokerage work?
Discount brokers like Zerodha charge ₹20 per executed order or 0.03% of turnover, whichever is lower. For delivery trades, many discount brokers charge zero brokerage. This flat fee model saves significant money compared to percentage-based brokers, especially for large orders.
What is the breakeven price?
The breakeven price is the minimum sell price at which you neither make a profit nor a loss after accounting for all trading charges. If you buy a stock at ₹500 with total round-trip charges of ₹50, your breakeven sell price would be approximately ₹500.50 (for 100 shares).
Are trading charges deductible from taxes?
STT paid on delivery trades is not deductible from capital gains. However, brokerage and other transaction charges can be added to your cost of acquisition, effectively reducing your taxable capital gains. For business income (F&O traders), all trading charges are deductible expenses.
