What is FIRE?

FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) is a movement focused on aggressive saving and investing to achieve financial freedom decades before the traditional retirement age. The goal is to accumulate enough wealth so that your investment returns cover your living expenses indefinitely.

How is the FIRE Number Calculated?

Your FIRE number is calculated as: Annual Expenses / Safe Withdrawal Rate. With the standard 4% SWR, your FIRE number is 25x your annual expenses. The calculator adjusts for inflation, so expenses at the time of FIRE will be higher than today's expenses.

FIRE in India

Achieving FIRE in India has unique considerations: higher inflation (6-7%), different tax structures, no social security safety net, and potentially higher healthcare costs in retirement. However, India also offers advantages like lower cost of living, higher fixed-income returns (PPF at 7.1%, FD at 7-8%), and family support systems.

Types of FIRE

  • Lean FIRE โ€” Retiring on a minimal budget, cutting expenses significantly
  • Fat FIRE โ€” Retiring with a comfortable or lavish lifestyle
  • Barista FIRE โ€” Semi-retirement with part-time income to cover some expenses
  • Coast FIRE โ€” Having enough saved that you no longer need to contribute to retirement

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the FIRE number?
The FIRE number is the total investment corpus you need to sustain your lifestyle without working. It is typically calculated as 25 times your annual expenses (based on the 4% safe withdrawal rate rule). For example, if you spend โ‚น6 lakh per year, your FIRE number is โ‚น1.5 crore.
What is the 4% rule?
The 4% rule (or safe withdrawal rate) suggests you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio annually in retirement without running out of money over a 30-year period. In India, some experts recommend a more conservative 3-3.5% SWR due to higher inflation.
Is FIRE realistic in India?
Yes, FIRE is achievable in India especially for high-income professionals. India offers advantages like lower cost of living, high savings rates, and good fixed-income returns. However, you need to account for higher inflation (6-7%), healthcare costs, and the lack of social security.
How much savings rate is needed for FIRE?
A savings rate of 50-70% of income is typically needed to achieve FIRE within 10-15 years. The higher your savings rate, the faster you reach FIRE. A 50% savings rate means you can retire in roughly 17 years, while a 75% savings rate reduces this to about 7 years.
