What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax that replaced multiple central and state taxes like VAT, excise duty, and service tax from July 2017. It is levied on the supply of goods and services at every stage of the supply chain, with input tax credit available to avoid cascading taxes.
GST Rate Slabs in India
India follows a four-tier GST rate structure:
- 5% GST โ Essential items like packaged food, footwear under โน500, transport services
- 12% GST โ Processed food, business class air tickets, movie tickets under โน100
- 18% GST โ Most goods and services including electronics, restaurants, IT services
- 28% GST โ Luxury items like cars, tobacco, aerated drinks, cement
CGST vs SGST vs IGST
- Intra-state supply: GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For example, 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
- Inter-state supply: The entire GST is charged as IGST (Integrated GST). For example, 18% GST = 18% IGST.
How to Calculate GST
- Add GST: Total = Base Price + (Base Price ร GST Rate / 100)
- Remove GST: Base Price = Total Price ร 100 / (100 + GST Rate)
